The concept of faith has caused me much grief for quite some time. In fact, it took my wondering about it for nearly a year for me to first peg my pain. When I did, I found that it was by my own misunderstanding that I was cut so deep, and that the misunderstanding was so rudimentary that it existed in the very definition of faith itself.  (more…)

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

Horseshoes is a game that evolved from Grecian discus throwing. The original game was played with iron plates or rings and became a favorite among soldiers. Lacking the money and materials for the proper throwing utensils, soldiers improvised with the bounty of discarded horseshoes. To which the game evolved to actually being played with horseshoes. Illicit drugs, drunken revelry, sexually charged parties. All these are endeavors to encounter certain thrilling pleasures. They are alluring and appealing, and they are unable to deliver the satisfaction they promise. Every party ends. Every high comes back to reality, often nauseatingly and body-wrackingly. Every sexual endeavor concludes, sometimes with unintended consequences.

Atheists are notorious for attributing evil to God. God could not exist in a world so full of wickedness, they say. Just as we all have an image and a standard in our heads for who we are and should be, we also have one that depicts who God is and what he should do for us. When something frustrates that ideal we have pinned on Him, we blame.

Blinded by Darkness

We Christians are famous for our analogies. Sometimes we’ll describe faith with a chair or peace with a river; sometimes we’ll liken impulses to a piano or the Church to a body. While analogies are fun, both to make and to ponder, the value we place in our analogies really amounts to their use in helping us understand our world and our God.

In This Shadowland

I will be the death of me.” This phrase echoed in my head for days. It came first in the midst of my pondering music to prepare for a house-concert that my roommates and I were hosting. I was seeking inspiration to write a “call and response” type song, one reminiscent of an of old spiritual. I wanted to find a specific “response” that would answer each of my “calls.”
